Debian Package

There is a Debian package available: http://www.mirbsd.org/~tg/Debs/dists/sarge/wtf/Pkgs/wtf/. The acronymsDB has to be updated manually, there won't be a package update every time.

How to install mirbsd wtf in your home dir

  • sudo apt install mksh # You need the mirbsd korn shell
  • mkdir ~/bin
  • mkdir ~/man; mkdir ~/man/man1;
  • mkdir ~/usr/; mkdir ~/usr/share; mkdir ~/usr/share/misc
  • cd ~/bin
  • wget “https://www.mirbsd.org/cvs.cgi/~checkout~/src/usr.bin/wtf/wtf?rev=1.38;content-type=text%2Fplain” -O wtf # this uses version 1.38, watch out for the newest version
  • chmod +x wtf
  • cd ~/man/man1
  • wget “https://www.mirbsd.org/cvs.cgi/~checkout~/src/usr.bin/wtf/wtf.1?rev=1.26;content-type=text%2Fplain;only_with_tag=HEAD” -O wtf.1
  • gzip -9 wtf.1
  • cd ~/usr/share/misc
  • wget “https://www.mirbsd.org/acronyms.gz”; gunzip acronyms.gz
  • echo export ACRONYMSDB=“/home/user/usr/share/misc/acronyms » ~/.profile # replace user with your username
  • source ~/.profile

How to install wtfbsd in your home dir without root

  • cd /tmp
  • mkdir wtf; cd wtf
  • Download wtfbsd
  • tar -xvzf wtf-*.gz
  • cd wtf-date
  • chmod +x wtf
  • mkdir ~/bin
  • cp wtf ~/bin
  • mkdir ~/man && mkdir ~/man/man6
  • cp wtf.6 ~/man/man6
  • gzip -9 ~/man/man6/wtf.6
  • mkdir ~/usr && mkdir ~/usr/share && mkdir ~/usr/share/misc
  • cat acronyms acronyms.comp acronyms-o.real > ~/usr/share/misc/acronyms # The different DBs are copied together in one file
  • echo export ACRONYMSDB=”/home/user/usr/share/misc/acronyms » ~/.profile # replace user with your username
